LOT NUMBER 47

Floral pattern jug, Model No 487-28, Scheurich Keramik, second half C20th

A jug, the body of broad ovoid globular form above a shallow stepped foot with a short concave neck and a modelled rounded profile rim, the loop handle with modelling and scroll terminals, glazed in tones of brown and red and decorated with deeply modelled moulded designs, a panel of large red floral blooms to the body with brown borders above and below with large repeating beads and repeating inverted lotus leaf panels to the neck, the interior and base glazed brown and the bottom with raised moulded marks ‘487-28’ ‘W.GERMANY’.

Although not marked as such, this vase has all the hallmarks of the firm Scheurich Keramik which started production in 1954, rather later than most of its competitors, but soon became the largest producer of commercial art pottery in Germany. Their pieces rarely carried the factory name but usually the model number followed by the height in centimetres with ‘W.Germany’ below, as here. Model number 487, like its close counterpart 287 is found in a variety of sizes and colourings, but the striking combination of green and red here is really the most effective. Dating is probably to the 1960s or 1970s.
