Lava glaze Jug, Dümler & Breiden, second half C20th
A jug, the body of ovoid form above a stepped foot and below a tall cylindrical neck flaring out towards the top rim, the side with a loop handle with modelled terminals, the exterior glazed in tones of green, mustard and brown, the neck with a mottled and textured effect lava glaze, the interior glazed brown and the base similarly coloured with a pronounced stipple effect largely concealing the impressed markings.Although indistinct, the interlocking ‘DB’ mark resembling crossed swords used by the German firm Dümler & Breiden can just be made out with (most likely) numbers below and then the lettering ‘GERMANY’ (see image 8). Dumler & Breiden was founded in 1883 by Peter Dümler and Albert Breiden and was located in Hohr Grenzhausen. During the late 19th and early 20th century they produced beer steins and punch bowls eventually moving on from the 1950s to joining the other well known West German ceramics manufacturers in producing ‘art pottery’ wares. Their pieces were often more rugged in appearance with an emphasis on colourful and textured glazes, often associated with the ‘fat lava’ style. Production eventually ceased in 1995. It is only the later pieces which were marked with their factory name, so a dating here is to the 1960s or 1970s is the most likely which is in keeping with the general style of the piece.
