LOT NUMBER 17
Orange vase, Model No 617-20, probably Scheurich Keramik, second half C20th
A vase, the slender ovoid body tapering slightly inwards towards the angular flaring top rim, the mottled and streaked orange colour glaze broken by a central teal coloured band with raised ‘basketwork’ decoration, the interior glazed brown and the base orange, the bottom with raised moulded marks ‘W-GERMANY’ ‘617-20’.Similar colourings and decoration can be found on pieces made by Bay Keramik, but these are marked with their name underneath, as was normal for their productions. The format of the mark here resembles that used by Scheurich Keramik in their earlier years and this is most likely, then, one of their designs. While it commenced production later than many of its competitors, Scheurich grew to become the principal exporter of West German ceramics through until the 1980s and beyond, making vases and pitchers in a wide variety of shapes and designs. ‘617’ denotes the model number and ‘20’ the size. Dating is probably to the 1960s/1970s.
