Small jug with splash glaze, Model No 574, possibly Jasba Keramik, mid C20th

A small jug, the body of exaggerated baluster form above a widely flaring ridged foot, the concave neck also ridged and rising to a galleried rim with a small pinched spout opposite to which is a simple loop handle, the splash glaze in tones of brown and green and continuing to the interior, the base glazed white with a stamped mark ‘GERMANY’ ‘574’ within a circular line border.

Pieces with near identical glaze effects and in one case an identical shape with a similar mark are usually attributed to the German firm Jasba Keramik, although there does not seem to be much evidence in proof of this. The firm was founded in 1926 by Jakob Schwaderlapp in Ransbach-Baumbach and takes its name from letters drawn from both his name and the location of his factory (‘JA’ ‘S’ ‘BA’). Its earlier pieces produced in the 1950s were fairly restrained being followed by more colourful wares created in the 1960s and early 1970s under the influence of its chief designer at the time, Christiane Reuter, until production of decorative ceramics ceased in 1975. This jug, if it is by Jasba, may be regarded, then, as transitional work and perhaps dates to the early 1960s. The form is quite striking and well complemented by the splash glaze effects.
