Small pitcher, Model No 1808/20, probably Scheurich Keramik, mid C20th
A small pitcher, the body of compressed globular form below a broad concave neck, the top rim also concave with a lightly modelled spout opposite to which is a simple loop handle, the body and top rim glazed in mottled red, the neck in brown with drip glaze effects and the interior in mottled brown, the base glazed white with impressed numbers ‘1808/20’.Although not marked with their name (few pieces were until the later years of production although some carry the wording ‘W-GERMANY’) this vase has all the hallmarks of the Scheurich factory founded in 1954 by Alois Scheurich who had been a partner before then in the firm ‘Scheurich and Greulich’ (S&G) since 1927. While it commenced production later than many of its competitors, Scheurich grew to become the principal exporter of West German ceramics through until the 1980s and beyond, making vases and pitchers in a wide variety of shapes and designs. ‘1808’ denotes the model number and other similarly shaped jugs are found, all with the same model number but in a variety of heights and decoration. All, though, are attributed to Scheurich. The colourings here are typical of the firm’s glaze effects and combine successfully. Dating is probably to the 1960s or 1970s.
