LOT NUMBER 34
Squat form Vase, Model No 284-15, Scheurich Keramik, second half C20th
A vase, the body of squat globular form below a short concave neck with a bulbous rim, the speckled glaze in tones of cream, mustard and light brown with polychrome floral tendrils bordered in a black ‘lava’ glaze, the interior glazed brown and the base light brown with (indistinct) raised modelled marks ‘284-15’ ‘W.GERMANY’.Although not marked as such, this vase has all the hallmarks of the firm Scheurich Keramik which started production in 1954, rather later than most of its competitors, but soon became the largest producer of commercial art pottery in Germany. Their pieces rarely carried the factory name but usually the model number followed by the height in centimetres with ‘W.Germany’ below, as here. The pattern here, which is found on other vases and jugs, some larger, utilises the crusty effect ‘lava’ glaze which was one of the staples of the West German ceramics manufacturers. The small size here makes this piece particularly appealing. Dating is probably to the 1960s or 1970s.
