LOT NUMBER 46
Vase with lava glazes, Model No 479/22, Dümler & Breiden, 1960s/1970s
A vase, the body of slender ovoid form above a short spreading foot and below a concave neck flaring out to the top rim, the mottled splash glaze in tones of brown, olive green, mustard and cream and applied in irregular swirling bands with speckle edges in the ‘lava glaze’ style, the interior glazed black and the base similarly so with raised moulded marks, an interlocking ‘DB’ mark resembling crossed swords, the numbers 479/22 and lettering ‘GERMANY’.Dumler & Breiden was founded in 1883 by Peter Dümler and Albert Breiden and located in Hohr Grenzhausen. During the late 19th and early 20th century they produced beer steins and punch bowls eventually moving on from the 1950s to joining the other well known West German ceramics manufacturers in producing ‘art pottery’ wares. Their pieces were often more rugged in appearance with an emphasis on colourful and textured glazes, often associated with the ‘fat lava’ style. Production eventually ceased in 1995. It is only the later pieces which were marked with their factory name, and the dating here probably to the 1960s or 1970s when the lava glaze patterns seem to have been particularly in vogue.
