Studio Pottery Vase with incised lotus, signed CAC, C20th
A studio pottery vase of bottle form, the broad pear shape body above a short spreading foot and rising to a narrow cylindrical neck slightly flaring towards the top rim, decorated overall with a textured glaze with mottling effects in greens, browns, blues and light aubergine which continues to the underneath and on which has been incised a gilt outline lotus spray, the base with impressed initials ‘CAC’. While there is considerable skill here in both the potting and the decoration, the identity of the maker cannot be established and there are no direct parallels. The glaze effects, though, seem to copy Japanese ‘Raku’ ware which was introduced to Europe by Bernard Leach in the early twentieth century and then taken up in later years by Western potters, particularly in America, where a modified technique was evolved in which the piece was fired to an extremely high temperature and then placed in an open-air container filled with combustible material which, as it cooled, led to the production of a wide variety of colours and surface effects such as we see here.
