LOT NUMBER 111
Art Nouveau Bronze Tray, stamped 172 Deposé, French, c1900
Typical of the style of the Art Nouveau era with its emphasis on organic forms, this bronze tray, perhaps intended for serving salad, is of lobed rectangular form with two handles in the form of lotus branches. Deeply and intricately cast there is a lotus spray at the top which complements the handles at the side and both are set on a wavy line ground with milled detail, perhaps intended to represent water. The underside has four small feet and is decorated with minute punch work dots. There is also a stamped mark ‘172 Deposé’ which occurs on other examples of this model and indicates manufacture in France where this design registration stamp (déposé meaning registered/patented) was used around 1900. For devotees of Art Nouveau this would be the acquisition of a classic object, truly representative if not archetypal of the style.Width 28cm
