Chinese cloisonne bangle, the exterior with raised enamel decoration of stylised scrolling foliage set on a speckled gilt ground between two bands of stylised floral sprays and clouds on a brick red ground, the interior finished in blue enamel; gilt rims to the top and bottom. The style of decoration suggests a circa date in the early twentieth century.

Lot of 3 Chinese bangles

This is nice lot of three bangles, one cloisonné and two cinnabar. The larger cinnabar bangle is beautifully detailed on black ground, the thinner cinnabar is more typical and has more age, the cloisonné is lovely work on a blue ground.

Large Art Deco green Bakelite Buckle with a label for Harlem Adler, American 1930s

This is an unusual and rare buckle in olive green swirl and marble effect bakelite. The design is a classic Art Deco shape its angular form and typical carved geometric lines. The closure does not depend upon metal fitments which is uncommon and pleasing. The buckle is a very large size and comes with its original sample store tag from Harlem-Adler & Co. in New York, who were known principally as manufactures of buttons from the 1930s to 1950s but carried lines in other fashion accessories as well. A classic of its time, then, complete with a bit of history and true collector’s item!

Outstanding Egyptian Revival necklace c1960

This is a very unusual necklace that features a large central pendant that depicts a beautiful design of Egyptian iconography. This includes cobras, ankh symbols, Horus the bird god and Ramses II. It is all done in bright gold with enamel work. This is on its original rope style chain fashioned to allow the pendant sit on the upper chest. It is probably of American manufacture.

This is a very rare brooch comprising a central faux turquoise glass stone surrounded by smaller beadwork set into white metal. This is a typical Czech glass design for makers such as the Neiger Brothers.

Art Deco Catalin Bakelite necklace, American c1930

This is a fabulous necklace comprising very large mustard coloured catalin beads in tubular, ovoid and globular shapes. Catalin is a form of plastic that is comtemporary with Bakelite. They are very similar as they are both composed of phenol and formeldehyde. The main difference is that Catalin was poured a poured liquid and Bakelite was moulded from a granular powder. Catalin is a brand name developed and trademarked in 1927 by the American Catalin Corporation of New York City, when the patent on Bakelite expired that year. It was used in a variety of applications, including costume jewellery, until the end of the second world war when it became too expensive, as every piece had to be individually cast and polished. Catalin jewellery is often incorrectly referred to as bakelite but has a distinction all of its own and this necklace is prime example of the fashion designs produced in the 1930s.

This is a stunning strand of large tear drop opaline glass beads strung with conical silver beads. Opaline glass has been around since the 19th century and can be seen in jewellery from this time. These beads are of exceptional quality and appear to glow in both low light and daylight. There are flashes of pink and yellow that make these beads dance like they are lit from within. They are better quality than most authentic opals of this type. Has been fitted with a modern extender.

This is a dazzling necklace comrising Opalite beads. These are facetted pear shaped beads as well as round beads. The luminosity within these stones are incredible they appear to be glowing in both sun light and indoor light.

Opalite is a type of synthetic glass often mistaken for a gemstone due to its alluring translucence and the play of colors similar to those seen in opals. Unlike natural gemstones, opalite is man-made, primarily from dolomite and metal to create its distinctive shimmering and milky appearance. It typically exhibits a soft, opalescent sheen with a blue or orange glow when light passes through it, making it popular in jewelry and decorative objects.(geologyscience.com)

This is quite an usual pair of earring in the Victorian style made in the 1920s, They have a typical Victorian lyre shape with a bow. The unusual part is that they have beautiful enamel medallions that are Yin and Yang symbols. They are gilt brass and were modest costume jewellery in their time.

This is a very rare necklace that has an intricate design with Egyptian motifs throughout. There are ruby glass stations that culminate into a multi strand design ending in a large pendant with Tutankhamun flanked by two large ruby paste glass stones. It is most likely French or Belgian.

This is a great pair of earrings made from Ivorine or celluloid, It has three concentric circles with small elephants in the centre. The are screw back and do not appear to be silver. These are very light and easy to wear for long periods despite being quite a statement.

Art Deco Cicada Necklace, probably English 1930s

This is a very unusual necklace comprising horn that has been carved into beads and a complementary cicada pendant. Cicadas are a very common Art Deco motif and are seen mainly in brooches. The modelling here is highly stylised but more than a nod to this popular motif of the period. This is most likely the work of English craftsmen and most elegant in the simplicity of its design.

Edwardian Transitional necklace c1920

This is a stunning necklace comprising blue glass bead stations in a lariate style ending with a large blue glass pendant with three drops. It is transitional as it is a bit later than Edwardian so has both Edwardian elements and Art Deco elements in its design. It is set into gilt metal with a screw barrel clasp.

This is a lovely and delicate necklace comprising stations of autumn maple leaves that cold painting in green and red to represent the change of the seasons. It has a bead chain and a hook clasp. Cold painting on metal refers to an enamel paint being applied to the cold metai i.e. not fired. The metal is gilt brass.

This is a lovely and delicate necklace comprising 9 strands of real seed pearls. Three of the strands also have gold tone beads. It ends in a gold tone box clasp. Probably Japanese in origin. Pearls have a very high lustre and are of great quality.

This is a totally unique necklace and earrings comprising cultured pearls set with large curtain of smaller pearls and mother of pearl geometric shapes with corresponding earrings. This is exclusively pears and mother of pearl, there are no other materials aside from the mirco beads, clasp and earring hooks. The work that went into this is astounding! This is not for a wall flower but if you like to get noticed try this one! :)

Incredible Hobe suite of Earrings and a Brooch, 1950s

This is an extremely rare set of portrait miniatures set into earrings and a brooch by the well known makers of costume jewellery, Hobe Cie. The miniatures are surrounded by diamantes and faux pearls, the portraits themselves being prints with hand colouring. All three pieces are signed, as illustrated.

Hobe was founded in 1887 by the French goldsmith Jacques Hobe as makers of fine jewellery. The costume jewellery division, Hobe Cie, was added 40 years later by his son, William Hobe, who brought the firm to America in 1927 and was commissioned by Flo Ziegfeld to design and manufacture jewellery for his Ziegfeld Follies costumes. By repute this is the origin of the expression costume jewellery. Production continued from the 1930s to the 1990s and the form of mark here suggests a more later dating within their range.

This is a super bangle comprising buttons encased in lucite. it has a rather homemade quality so it might have been made from a kit. This just adds to the vintage look and makes it even more fun! :)

Goldette NY Egyptian Revival Statement Necklace, 1970s

This is a very striking and heavy necklace with a very large central pendant with seven drops ending in glass beads. It is made from gilt metal by Goldette, a costume jewelry company that was founded in the 1950s and produced jewellery until the 1970s. Their mark appears on the reverse (see image 6). It is rare to find costume jewellery that is as robust and well made as the pieces Goldette produced and they stand out still today.

Bakelite Ivorine Mourning Brooch, British c1930

This is a brooch formed from bakelite intended to mimic ivory with its off white colouring. It shows a hand holding a rose and the slightly antique style reflects the fact that this was originally a Victorian design, intended to be a mourning brooch, the material of which would have been ivory (see image 4 for examples in the British Museum). Developed in New York in 1907 and patented two years later bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. By the 1920s it became a popular material for jewellery and pieces were produced for some years thereafter. Dating here is probably to the 1930s or 1940s.

Butler and Wilson Skull Necklace, boxed, modern

There is certainly a hint of the macabre in this ‘halloween’ necklace made by the well known British firm, Butler and Wilson. Founded by Nicky Butler and Simon Wilson in 1969 and initially trading from the once famous Antiquarius antiques market in Chelsea, the company is best-known for its crystal costume jewellery and their pieces have been worn by celebrities and even members of the Royal Family. The firm still trades today and their current range does include a number of skull design pieces but this necklace is around 15 years old. Silver metal and crystals are used to create five skull heads, the largest acting as a pendant with five skull drops. These are linked by a chain which terminates in a spring closure which has a circular medallion embossed with the firm’s name. The necklace comes with its original box which remains in excellent condition. Not perhaps to everyone’s taste but certainly a statement accessory!

Art Deco Bakelite beads c1930

This a very rare long strand of graduated Bakelite beads in an octahedron shape. They are strung on what might be the original black cord and fitted with a barrel clasp. The beads have been Simichrome tested and are definitely Bakelite.

They are of the most intense ruby red colour and the smaller spacer beads are the same shape.

Catalin bead necklace with amulet c1950

This is a very unusual necklace comprising large dual-coloured grey beads. These are Catalin which is an early plastic. The beads have been Simichrome tested and are not Bakelite.

The beads are strung onto silk cord and end with a silvered metal amulet. This is most likely Turkish in origin.

1001 Arabian Nights Brooch c1930

This is a fun brooch that depicts a rather evil looking sorcerer. He has glass eyes and there is a large glass stone in his turban. The brooch is made from brass and would have had colourful enamel painting in its time. It also appears that originally there might have been drops from the ears.

Victorian carved celluloid cross c1900

This is a very unusual pendant comprising a very intricate carving in celluloid plastic. This type of plastic was also called Ivorine as it was meant to simulate ivory. This was most likely cast and then hand finished. It has its original loop.

Jakob Bengel Machine Age necklace c1930

This a very collectable necklace by the jewellery manufacturer Jakob Bengel. It comprises five graduated triangular stations in galalith and chromed metal.

Jakob Bengel was a chain and costume jewelry factory, founded by Jakob Bengel in 1873 in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. Until 1920, the company specialized in the production of watch chains and chatelaines but in the 1920s and 1930s it became one of the leading manufacturers of fashion jewelry in the Art Deco style.

Long strand of butterscotch amber coloured beads c1960

This is a bold statement necklace comprising graduated round beads. These are made from an early plastic called Catalin. They have been Simichrome tested and they are not Bakelite. There are glass spacer beads and no clasp.

One of the beads has small pin prick holes as someone must have done a heated needle test for amber. See images.

This is an imposing three strand necklace comprised of assembled graduated marble effect butterscotch amber beads joined at the head with a silver clasp. The beads have recently been restrung with wire to make the whole more robust and safer to wear. The three strands interlock perfectly and the selection of beads has been carefully chosen in respect of colouring and size to produce a striking ensemble which is bound to impress.
