TEST ITEM - Michael Cardew (British, 1901-1983) A rare and early Convector Heater, circa 1930

Michael Cardew (British, 1901-1983)

A rare and early Convector Heater, circa 1930

Stoneware, the tall cylincrical body set with a domed lid with inset opeing, green glaze over intricately incised and impressed horizontal patterning, incised chevrons to the four feet and the two looping handles, incised MC and Winchcombe Pottery seals

Provenance: From the Estate of Michael Cardew

This rare early Convector Heater was the largest of only three such forms made by Cardew in the early years at Winchcombe Pottery. Positioned in the Winchcombe Pottery studio, Cardew would place a small saucepan of water on top that would then keep warm enough for his morning shave. The remaining two convectors remain with the family.
