Brass dish with eagle medallion, WMF with mark, early C20th

A brass circular dish, fairly thinly cast, the shallow rounded edged well with a flat rim, the centre with an embossed medallion of an eagle in a circular frame, the surface of the well lightly hammer beaten, the edge with four raised circular bosses and four incised circular roundels, the reverse with elements of the decoration showing through, an original hanging device at the top and opposite a small incised diamond shape mark with an ostrich looking left.

The style of this piece loosely recalls German work from the early sixteenth century (see images 9, 10) but is an early twentieth century recreation, attributable by its mark to the well known firm WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) and datable by the format of the mark to between 1910 and 1930. One of the firm’s founders was Daniel Straub and Strauß is a German noun meaning ostrich; this mark, then, commemorates him and was apparently used frequently on pieces in the Art Nouveau or Secessionist styles as we have here. This is an interesting example of WMF’s revivalist brass metalworks and clearly marked as of their manufacture. The scratched lettering may be for ‘GERMANY’ which was often added to pieces intended for export.
