Silver Serving Spoon, Larsen & Co, Denmark, with hallmarks, 1908
A large and very fine serving or casserole spoon, the deep ovoid bowl with an elaborately cast handle with stylised seaweed and sea shells, the reverse plain but with three impressed marks including the manufacturer’s name ‘Larsen & Co’.Larsen & Co. was a Danish firm of silversmiths based in Copenhagen, which produced fine silverware from 1906 to 1937, with various successors then also using the Larsen name. The Art Nouveau style decoration of the handle of this piece was known as the ‘Tang’ pattern, although marine inspired designs are not actually found in the Tang dynasty Chinese silver pieces from which the name is derived. The quality of the workmanship speaks for itself and the spoon is also clearly marked. The top device of three towers stands for Copenhagen and guarantees the quality of the metal as solid silver rather than silver plate; below the towers, the numbers ‘08’ indicate that the piece was assayed in 1908 when the minimum purity of Danish silver was .830 or 83% pure silver. Next to this is the manufacturer’s name and below this the assay mark, the initials CFH in a circle which stand for Christian F. Heise, the chief State Assay Master (Guardein) in Denmark from 1904 to 1932. The serving spoon is perhaps less commonly found than its smaller counterparts, making this an interesting addition to a collection of European silver which is also a highly decorative item in its own right.
