LOT NUMBER 73
Square cut glass Scent Bottle with monogrammed silver top, probably W&G Neal, hallmarked London 1906
A glass scent bottle of upright square form the sides with deep cut glass decoration with diamond shape and geometric motifs, the neck fitted with a hinged silver lid with a high relief embossed design of stylised scrolling foliage encircling a plain slightly domed circular panel with an engraved monogram ‘E R C H’, the bottom rim with a four character hallmark (the first indistinct) and the lid inner edge with a three character hallmark (the first again indistinct). There is just enough of the first mark for it to be made out with a fair degree of certainty as being that of W&G Neal (see image 9 for a clearer example which shares the same shape of frame), London based silversmiths trading from the late 1880s to the late 1900s, known for producing high quality items of small silverware. The opulence of the lid matches the expressive decoration of the glass, both in keeping with Edwardian taste. The hallmark is for London and the date letter signifies 1906.
