Victorian Whitby Jet mourning necklace with portrait plaque, c1900

This is a necklace comprising Whitby Jet round and flat beads with a pendant that is mounted with a central ceramic portrait plaque. The design indicates that it is a piece of mourning jewellery, as is much of the Whitby Jet jewellery, but given the type of portrait, it seems to have been more intended as a decorative item. The necklace has been later restrung on black cotton and is knotted between the beads.
