Large Art Deco green Bakelite Buckle with a label for Harlem Adler, American 1930s

This is an unusual and rare buckle in olive green swirl and marble effect bakelite. The design is a classic Art Deco shape its angular form and typical carved geometric lines. The closure does not depend upon metal fitments which is uncommon and pleasing. The buckle is a very large size and comes with its original sample store tag from Harlem-Adler & Co. in New York, who were known principally as manufactures of buttons from the 1930s to 1950s but carried lines in other fashion accessories as well. A classic of its time, then, complete with a bit of history and true collector’s item!

Silver Pendant, Tutankhamun and Ankhsenamun, Egyptian 1950s

A small silver pendant cast in relief with two figures of a man and a woman representing the pharaoh Tutankhamun and his wife Ankhsenamun in typical court dress with stylised hieroglyph reliefs above, the reverse plain. Ankhsenamun's robe has a small stamped mark indicating that the piece is Egyptian silver and probably also giving the maker's name or the place of manufacture. Dating is likely to the 1950s. The pendant is fitted with a silver chain with '925' stamps.
Islamic Silver Necklace with Niello work plaques, c1930

This is an interesting silver necklace, probably made in Turkey in the mid twentieth century. Four strands of wheat chain join seven circular plaques and terminate in a push pin clasp. The faces of the plaques are decorated with fleur-de-lis and scrolling foliage in a clover leaf format on a black ground and the square reverses are all stamped ‘925’. Similar decoration appears on the clasp.
The technique used is that of ‘niello’ work. (The word derives either from the classical Latin word ‘nigellum’ or the later mediaeval words ‘nigello’ or ‘neelo’.) Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead and used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, especially silver. Added as a paste, it hardens to a black colour after firing and is then polished. Here it is the ground that formed from niello while the design shows though in silver, a less common version.
There is much skill in the craftsmanship here and the result is a piece of classic and timeless simplicity.
Egyptian Revival statement necklace c1920

This is quite an early example of Egyptian Revival pieces made available for the general public. It is a short necklace in a breast plate design with two hanging pendants with many of the standard Egyptian symbols and icons cast in brass and decorated with enamel painting. This would have been quite a modest item in its time, created for those who wanted a taste of the glamour of the Egyptian era.

This is a wonderful set set with operculum shells. A large statement necklace and earrings set in silver tone base metal. What is an operculum shell?
An operculum is a calcareous structure created by many sea snails that serves as a little “trapdoor” to safely close them inside their shell. When, say, the tide goes out, stranding a sea snail too far from the water, the gastropod can draw itself deep into its shell and pull the operculum closed behind it.

This is a very striking pair of earrings comprising numerous small stones mounted in low grade silver, termed marcasite jewellery, Both pieces are marked for silver and the floral and leaf design is very typical of the Victorian era when pieces in this style enjoyed great popularity and were favoured even by the monarch herself. Marcasite Jewellery is actually made from pyrite ('fool's gold'), a much cheaper substitute for true diamonds!
Heavy brass and enamel collar necklace in the manner of Albert Gustav Bunge (1893 - 1967)

This is a very unusual and striking necklace comprising two pieces that make up as a collar with three heavy brass drops. Each drop has very unusual enamel work that is quite thick and has a piece of agate in the centre.
The style is very similar to the designs of Albert Gustav Bunge (1893 - 1967). He was a German metalworker and enamel artist best known for his elegantly crafted bracelets, plates, cups, book ends, and other household objects. Bunge combined utilitarian properties of design with decorative depictions of colourful, geometric shapes and stylized animals.
The piece is unmarked and therefore a firm attribution is not possible but the parallels are striking nevertheless.
Two complementary Bracelets in a Greek Key design

This is an interesting lot of two bracelets that match one another well. They are both finely made and are decorated in the typically stylish Greek Key design. Continental and marked 925. The ‘Greek key’, also known as the ‘meander’, is a repeating geometric motif that has been used in a wide variety of decorative contexts for centuries. The pattern can be found in a variety of forms. At its most basic, it is a band consisting of short horizontal and vertical lines, connected at right angles. But it can be more complex, forming labyrinths and interlocking key patterns.

This is a large brooch with a lily spray design. It is marked 'silver' and there is a makers mark. The origin of this piece isn't clear.
Green Leather Jewellery Box with Bramah Lock, early C20th

This is a fine quality jewellery box covered in green leather with a graining effect. The rectangular base is fitted with a shallow flush lid and attached by brass lever hinges. The front of the base has a lock marked ‘Bramah’ (lacking its original key) and the lid a leather strap handle with fine stitching. Inside are two removable trays, the top one with compartments for jewellery, and the bottom of the box is divided into two compartments. The linings of the box and trays are in green leather and velvet with moiré silk to the inside of the lid. As with the previous lot, there are many features here of a ‘deluxe’ item, in particular the ‘Bramah’ lock, known for its high security, and the lever hinges. This box perhaps dates to a little later than the previous one, more to the 1930s but is no less of a ‘luxury’ item which equally well retains its functionality today.

Two mounted Wedgwood blue jasperware Cameo Brooches, C19th, C20th

Two mounted Wedgwood blue jasperware Cameo Brooches with neo classical style figures, each of circular form typically decorated with a figure in raised white relief on a light blue ground, the first with a cherub and marked 'Wedgwood Made In England' to the reverse with the pattern number '65' and the second with a standing figure holding a club and possibly intended to depict Heracles and marked 'Wedgwood' to the reverse with a small cross. The mounting of the first is marked silver but the second is unmarked and may perhaps be white metal. The format of the mark on the 'cherub' brooch indicates a C20th dating probably in the first half, whereas the mark on the 'Heracles' brooch suggests a C19th dating which may explain the slight discolouration to the figure. The differing style of the mounts (milled edge/rope twist) may perhaps conform with this.

This is a rare bracelet comprising silver stations set with domed enamel plaques. The plaques have bird and floral designs and are set in silver with an integrated clasp with floral detail. The piece is unmarked but would be 800 silver. It is in excellent condition which makes it even more unique as these types of bracelet tend to have damage. The size and decoration of the plaques contribute to an elegant piece of traditional 'arm candy'!

Silver Monogram Celtic Style Brooch Hallmarked 1878/1879

A Silver Celtic Style Brooch, the design with interlacing strands in a variety of surface textures, three of which seem to represent the letters 'S' 'S' 'E', hallmarked to the reverse with the stamps (from right to left) lion (fitness mark), anchor, (Birmingham Assay Office mark), 'd' (Date letter for Birmingham 1878 to 1879), 'EU' (Sponsors mark - the firm which submitted the item to the assay office - for Edwin Umfreville who traded at 119 Jermyn Street, St James's, London and offered items with bespoke monograms).
An advert for Edwin Umfreville appeared in 'The Bazaar, The Exchange and Mart - 19th April 1879' where one of his pieces is described. "Like all the “ E. U." jewellery that we have seen, the workmanship is first-class, and the design most tasteful."

Celtic Style Pewter Brooch in the form of a Panthers Head, C20th

A pewter brooch in the form of a Panther's head, the mouth holding a horseshoe like ring inset with diamante stones, the design in a Celtic style and perhaps intended to represent a door knocker. There are no markings to this piece and its origin and dating are difficult to determine. Perhaps it can be seen to relate to Arts and Crafts pieces of the early C20th and manufacture in the South West of England (compare the Celtic Style brooch, Lot 13 in this sale) is perhaps a possibility.

Silver Medal or Watch Fob dated 1923, B.P.C.G.S.

A small piece of history here which will need some unravelling. Suspended on a piece of blue ribbon from a silver bar pin marked ‘1923’ is an oval silver medal or watch fob, decorated to the front with two bands of laurel leaves, geometric shapes in an art deco style and a central gilt coloured shield with the engraved letters B.P.C.G.S. The reverse is plain with the engraved wording ‘SENIOR 1ST’ ‘APPARATUS’ ‘LMILES’ and hall marks for 1923 with the maker’s mark ‘JD&CO’, standing for Joseph Daffern & Co, silversmiths at Hatton Garden from 1908 to 1931 and producers of commemorative medals and watch fobs. ‘Apparatus’ is the Latin word used in English to denote equipment or organisation but may have had a special meaning for whatever body is indicated by the acronym on the front. We may never know but L MILES was clearly a successful and deserving recipient!

Victorian Silver Buckle set with Paste Stones, German circa 1900

This is a striking silver buckle of rectangular form with two bands of brilliant paste stones surrounding four stylised flower head paste stone clusters, the reverse plain and marked 900 which implies manufacture in Germany where the standard for silver was a minimum of 800 parts to 1000 with 900 parts to 1000 as one of the alternatives (as opposed to the more usually found 925). There is in addition a double mark with a star and a wheel which may well be the maker's mark, but this is hard to identify.
The sparkling stones and high quality mounting (there is a considerable weight of silver in this piece) would have made this buckle a notable addition to the Victorian ladies' wardrobe and it could equally well catch the eye today.

A silver Brooch in the form of a Butterfly with modelled wings set with beads in metal and turquoise, the slender body terminating in two antennae. Marked Made in Mexico, Sterling with the maker's mark AE in a heart shape. There is also an Eagle mark which indicates the Taxco workshop but this is difficult to identify.
Art Deco Galalith Necklace and Pendant with Coral Red plaques, 1930s

This is a striking necklace and matching pendant made from Galalith, the necklace comprising red facetted graduated beads separated by small rings with grey facetted beads below and two silver gilt metal large modelled ovoid beads, all with silver gilt chain links, terminating in a trapezoid form plaque with a large grey hemispherical stone set in a stylised floral silver gilt mount, with further red and grey stones below and two triangular drops with silver gilt metal styised floral mounts.
Galalith is a a synthetic plastic made out of the interaction of casein and formaldehyde and was introduced to the fashion world by Coco Chanel in 1926. The commercial name is derived from the Ancient Greek words 'gala' (milk) and 'lithos' (stone).

This piece combines the angular simplicity of the Art Deco style, in particular the squared tubular bars, with classicising elements, most obviously the faux cameo portrait head. This is a totally unique necklace comprising forty strands of perfectly worked coral beads to create a dense bib effect. It has a clasp that is a hammered Edward VII British India copper coin that dates from circa 1910. This necklace ends in woven panels.

Siam silver cuff bracelet c1950

This is quite a rare cuff bracelet comprising heavy silver with worked silver spheres. It is marked 'Siam' 'Sterling', the typical mark for this type of silver, which is 925 grade. It is marked Siam as this was the name of Thailand until 1939 but the mark on jewellery continued until the 1970s and the pieces became quite popular souvenirs during the Korean and Vietnam wars. This specific design is found elsewhere but it is the Niello work pieces with dancers etc that are most associated with the tourist trade.
Triple strand of amber Bakelite beads, British 1930s

This is an imposing three strand necklace comprised of assembled graduated marble effect butterscotch amber beads joined at the head with a silver clasp. The beads have recently been restrung with wire to make the whole more robust and safer to wear. The three strands interlock perfectly and the selection of beads has been carefully chosen in respect of colouring and size to produce a striking ensemble which is bound to impress.
Danish silver floral brooch, Max Standager c1960

This is a large brooch in a typical modernist floral design by Max Standager, a silversmith who worked in Copenhagen from 1961 to 1985 and was well known for his organic form designs. It is marked 'Sterling' '925' 'Denmark M.S'.
Chinese lace agate earrings and necklace suite

This is a beautiful and detailed set of necklace and earrings in Chinese grey lace agate. The necklace is in a lariat style with beads and a circular carving that has four carved "charms" hanging from it. The beads are facetted agate and the clasp is a very fine carving of a flower. The earring compliment the necklace with carvings that have a barrel shape.
Long Art Deco carnelian, bloodstone and goldstone necklace 1930s

Wow where to start with this necklace. It is a very long opera length that is constructed with numerous stations using brass findings and glass bugle beads. The stations are carved carnelian panels and beads with bloodstone panels that have been mounted with goldstone to create duplets that can be worn on either side. It ends in a large pendant that is bloodstone and goldstone with carnelian drops. The stones are definitely of Scottish origin so the necklace is either Scottish or English.
Goldstone is a type of glittering glass made in a low-oxygen reducing atmosphere. The finished product can take a smooth polish and be carved into beads, figurines, or other artifacts suitable for semiprecious stone, and in fact goldstone is often mistaken for or misrepresented as a natural material. This is a very striking hinge bangle bracelet set with turquoise (perhaps sodalite) plaques. It has an integrated clasp where you press down on the lower part to release. It is marked 'Mexico 925'.
Lovely large brooch by Thomas L Mott c1940

This is a large brooch with a very detailed enameled plaque depicting a Louis XV style scene of lovers in a landscape. It is signed on reverse TLM for Thomas L Mott Company, famous for their range of charm brooches made from the 1920s to the 1940s.
Long strand of butterscotch amber coloured beads c1960

This is a bold statement necklace comprising graduated round beads. These are made from an early plastic called Catalin. They have been Simichrome tested and they are not Bakelite. There are glass spacer beads and no clasp.
One of the beads has small pin prick holes as someone must have done a heated needle test for amber. See images.

This is lovely ring with a bright white chalcedony stone surrounded with marcasites. These are set in silver with full English hallmarks for Birmingham 1951 with a makers mark 'NBS', most likely for Neal Bros.
Fun celluloid elephant motif earrings 1960s

This is a great pair of earrings made from Ivorine or celluloid, It has three concentric circles with small elephants in the centre. The are screw back and do not appear to be silver. These are very light and easy to wear for long periods despite being quite a statement.
Danish silver brooch, Niels Erik From, marked, c1960

This is a wonderful quality silver brooch made by Danish silversmiths Niels Erik From. It is in a characteristic Danish wreath design typical of the modernist designs developed by the firm in the 1970s. Established in 1931, the company took its name from its founder Niels Erik From (1908-1982) and initially concentrated on pieces in the style of the Danish Arts and crafts movement, later adapting to the changing fashions of the time. Niels Erik From's son joined with his father in the 1960s and continued the success of the business, running it himself for a few years after his Father's death but finally closing down in the late 1980s. The firm's designs remain highly collectible and this brooch is an excellent example of their later work. It marked ' Sterling' 'Denmark' 'N.E.From' '925 S'.
Art Deco bar brooch with rectangular opal c1920

This is a very elegant brooch in a long bar design set with marcasites and a large opal doublet stone where a thin, natural opal layer is adhered to a dark backing to enhance the brilliance of the colours. It is silver and unmarked so is most likely continental and might possibly have been a ring that was later converted into a brooch.

This a very lovely bracelet comprising a heavy sliver bangle style bracelet that has a heart at the centre. It is very sturdy and elegant at the same time. It is marked 925 TC-02 Mexico.. The TC number indicates the silversmith and the TC indicates Taxco.

This is a very interesting piece of ephemera that can be worn. It is a Liberty silver dollar encased in a filigree design. It has been "married" to a torque necklace so it really stands out at the neckline. You definitively won't see many of these around town! :)

This is a very rare example of Taxco silver. it boasts 150 grams of silver that has been formed as a ribbon like collar ending in two modernist plaques with pebble formations. It is marked Sterling 925 Mexico
Scottish agate specimen bracelet c1970

This is rather interesting as it is a quite large bracelet comprising numerous stations of carved agate stones. It showcases all colours and types of agate from banded agate to chalcedony and makes a real statement. This bracelet definitely has star power. It is strung on elastic, as it typical for these types of bracelets, so it is very easy to get on and off and it is super sturdy in addition.
Arts and Crafts brooch with carnelian and aventurine c1910

This is a very striking brooch that has a very recognisable Arts and Crafts design. It looks like a precursor to the designs of Rennie Mackintosh and is possibly even from his workshop. It is set with carnelian and aventurine stones and unmarked but is most likely from Scotland.
