LOT NUMBER 8
Geode form Murano dimpled sommerso glass bowl, Galliano Ferro, mid C20th
An exceptionally heavy glass bowl of rounded square form, the thick walls with 19 ‘dimples’, the orange red glass encased in a layer of uranium yellow glass, which is further encased in clear glass, using the ‘sommerso’ technique. The shape imitates geode rocks which are hollow and vaguely spherical and perhaps the ‘dimples’ are intended to reflect the geological origin of the design. The ‘sommerso’ technique was a speciality of the glassworks at Murano and involves creating layers of glass in different colours. One of the layers here comprises uranium glass and its distinctive green glow under strong light can be seen in some of the images. This particular model can be fairly firmly attributed to the ‘vetreria’ of Galliano Ferro, founded by him in 1955, since other examples are known with his studio label. The design is striking and most likely dates to Galliano Ferro’s early years of production, probably to the 1960s.| Size: | Diam (top ; max) 14.5cm, Ht 7cm, Base (max) 5cm |
